Bioinformatics is an emerging field that offers powerful analytic tools for study of the biological sciences. Putting that power in the hands of researchers who can use it requires creating a communications environment that will raise awareness of bioinformatics among researchers in both biology and information technology. The UT Office of Research is preparing a systematic approach to the university’s research communications needs that will address publics both internal and external to the institution. The current internal venue is Research Good News, a fortnightly subscriber-based e-newsletter that shares research accomplishments, opportunities, and policy issues within the university. Plans include the resumption of a research magazine and development of other new venues that will draw the attention of targeted publics to UT accomplishments in bioinformatics and other parts of the university’s research agenda.
