TRANSGENICS/KO's

This core will produce mice that are genetically engineered to eliminate specific genes or have specific genes expressed in unusual circumstances. Some of these genetically engineered mice mimic human conditions and thus provide models for the study of disease and disease treatment. A Task Force on Transgenic and Knockout Mice at UTHSC has been successful in creating a unit to produce transgenic mice.

This transgenic mouse core demonstrates how the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics can transform the research environment at UT. With modest initial support, a relationship was established with the Department of Comparative Medicine (whose basic function had been to provide animal care for the campus) to recruit a research-oriented assistant professor to direct the Transgenic/Knockout Mouse Facility. Furthermore, the Facility has been generating transgenic mice since 2000. The CGB will invest in the equipment to furnish a modern transgenic facility and will recruit at least one other faculty member to enhance the use of transgenic/knockout technology system-wide.
