The field of biomedical science requires a systematic approach to record and track
data about animal biospecimen collected. The University of Kentucky Mouse Tissue
Bank (UKMTB) is an information system developed by University of Kentucky Bioinformatics
Group (Sujin Kim, Ph.D. and Chemyong Ko, Ph.D.) which supports to inventory, annotate,
search, and dispense mouse specimen and related information from a geographically
dispersed repository. The system allows user to apply the letter of intent and track
their order status of specimen request online. The primary purpose of the system
was designed to support the University of Kentucky researchers who use mice as their
experimental models. Oracle 10g and JDeveloper 10g running on a Dell OPTIPLEX GX270
are being used to develop a front-end/back-end application. Based on a needs assessment
with a focus group, essential sub-modules were implemented within the system. These
include user, project, tracking, and, dispense, and retrieval/reporting management.
Field limited search options include search a record by animal ID, genotype, strain,
specimen ID or Ear tag, protocol IACUC number, and how the sample was banked. The
UKMTB is currently being implemented in several of the ongoing projects, and will
be modified as needed to support future endeavors. The UKMTB will thus function
as a valuable tool for investigators, greatly enhancing their efforts.
