Abstract
Fundamental Molecular Biology for Computer Scientists

Ramin Homayouni, Ph.D.
Director, Bioinformatics Program
University of Memphis

The objective of this workshop is to review basic molecular biology concepts that are relevant to current bioinformatics research. We will begin with the central dogma of molecular biology and then cover topics such as genome sequencing and annotation, single nucleotide polymorphisms, gene expression analysis, molecular pathways, and protein structure and function. This workshop is intended to give an overview and will not cover these topics in great detail.

Ramin Homayouni, Ph.D.

Ramin Homayouni is presently an associate professor of biology and the director of the bioinformatics program at the University of Memphis. Dr. Homayouni leads a multi-disciplinary team of researchers that investigate the mechanisms of neurodevelopment and neurodegeneration using mouse models. In addition, his lab is developing automated text-mining tools to assist in interpretation of genomic data using biomedical literature. His work has resulted in 3 US patent applications and has been published in over 22 peer-reviewed journal articles. Dr. Homayouni's research projects are currently supported by federal and private grants. Ramin Homayouni received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from The University of Houston in 1996 and has held positions at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the University of Tennessee Health Science.
